adding archive utilities to gnome 3 context menu

After manually installing Gnome 3 on Linux Mint, I found that the two very useful archive utilities – Extract and Compress – were missing from the right-click contextual menu in Nautilus. These are very convenient way of extracting a zip or compressing a folder contents to a zip in the file explorer. In order to add them back, open a terminal and

1. Install packages file-roller and xarchiver. The former may be already installed, in which case just install xarchiver.

sudo apt-get install file-roller xarchiver

2. Restart Nautilus

killall nautilus
nautilus &

The two menu items would be back in context now – i.e. “Extract” in case of right click on an archive file, and “Compress” in case of right click on a folder in Nautilus.
